Batman Actor Christian Bale Visits Victims, Hospital Personnel

Batman Actor Christian Bale Visits Victims, Hospital Personnel

AURORA — Christian Bale, star of the last three Batman films, met at the Medical Center of Aurora on Tuesday afternoon with seven patients injured in the mass shooting that occurred during a midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises." Hospital interim president Bill Voloch said Bale spent about 2½ hours at the hospital, where he met with five people being treated for their injuries. Two others came from Swedish Medical Center to meet Bale, who stars as Batman/Bruce Wayne.

"The patients were really happy to meet Bale," Voloch said. "They are obviously big fans of his movies. They wanted to see Batman and were really pleased to see Bale."

Bale and his wife, Sibi Blazic, also met with a number of doctors, Aurora police officers and emergency medical technicians who were first responders when James Eagan Holmes allegedly killed 12 people and injured 58 others at Century Aurora 16 theater early Friday. Bale spent about 10 minutes with each person.

"It was good for the patients," Voloch said. "We hope it was therapeutic for them, and all the staff really appreciated him coming."

Nurse Crystal Flateland said she definitely did.

Flateland and 18 other staff members from Swedish were taken to Medical Center of Aurora on Tuesday for an appreciation buffet and — to their surprise — a meet and greet with Bale.

"I am probably one of the biggest Batman fans ever," Flateland said. "It was amazing, actually, to get to meet him. I think it's really great he came out here. It was touching."

Flateland was called in to work after the shooting. During that morning, she was part of a medical team transferred to Medical Center of Aurora, where more help was needed. Flateland said she ended up working about 40 hours straight.

"It was kind of exhausting," Flateland said. "But I've now caught up on sleep and recovered."

Bale also spent some time with Gov. John Hickenlooper.

Medical Center of Aurora received 18 patients from the movie theater shooting, and seven were admitted. Four patients went to Swedish Medical Center.

Voloch said Bale notified hospital officials that he wanted to visit the injured but asked that media not be notified. "He just wanted to meet with victims and police."

Among the people Bale visited was Carey Rottman of Denver. Friends quickly tweeted out a photo of their visit.

Bale and Bazic also visited a growing memorial to victims near the movie theater.

Officials from Warner Bros. Pictures, maker of "The Dark Knight Rises," said Bale came to Aurora on his own.

"Mr. Bale is there as himself, not representing Warner Brothers," said an assistant for Susan Fleishman, executive vice president for Warner Brothers corporate communications.

Christian Bale was in the Denver metro area Tuesday to meet with victims of the Aurora theater shooting. In this photo released by Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, Colorado, via Twitter, Bale meets with Swedish staff members. (Swedish Medical Center)

Naked Justice Beginnings #1

Every hero has a beginning... You may know how Felix Himner got his amazing powers, but you have no idea how the hero Naked Justice was born.

Spanning the globe from Egypt to Great Britain, the adventure begins shortly after World War two ends. The world is in turmoil, and young Felix Himner struggles to gain control of his brand new super-human abilities.

His life has not been easy since his fateful encounter with the Pharaoh, King Cock-A-Tut. Sex with men has been impossible since Felix’s cock was transformed into a super-charged lightning rod!

One fateful day, Felix decides that he’s had enough, and finds himself seduced by a handsome stranger. But when Felix blows his load in the form of an electrical discharge, he is soon plunged into a battle to save the Earth from Interstellar Invaders.

This origins story is packed with new characters to meet, villains to loathe and hot, hard and hung male bodies to admire!

Written by Patrick Fillion, this compelling first volume is illustrated by both Jacob Mott and Shemyaza. Donald MacLean also returns to spice up the issues’ dialog with his unique brand of humor.

No collector will dare miss the incredible first issue of this three-part mini-series.

Green Lantern Takes Giant Step

It’s not the most surprising coming out of all time, but it’s definitely one of the biggest. He’s super. He wears a skintight green leotard and a flashy ring. He’s a powerful part of the Justice Society. And yep, he’s gay.

Every superhero has a few reboots in him. The nearly 72-year-old Alan Scott — aka the Green Lantern — has already gone through numerous incarnations in his evil-fighting existence. He’s been married. He’s had kids. He’s inhabited an alternate universe. You know, the usual life stuff. But his much-ballyhooed reinvention in DC Comics’ “Earth Two” No. 2 is a milestone in comics history. Because now the hunky blond is an openly gay man who gets to kiss his boyfriend and propose marriage to him. He’s just your ordinary hero, balancing his private life and the fate of the planet. Hell, yeah.

It’s been a good year to be a gay comic book character. Later this month, Northstar, who made history 20 years ago by becoming one of Marvel’s first gay characters, will marry his partner, Kyle. And earlier this year, Archie Andrews’ compatriot and Riverdale, U.S.A.’s first openly gay citizen, Kevin Keller, married his African-American boyfriend. One Million Moms had a predictable fit. The issue sold out.

If we assume the universe is riddled with both superheroes and regular small-town citizens, why wouldn’t some of them be gay? Because it has taken so long to acknowledge that, there’s nothing to do now but celebrate that it’s finally happening.

It helps that Alan, Northstar and Kevin are all monogamous, decent do-gooders. Imagine how far we’ll have come when gay characters are so commonplace that they can be ubervillans. too. (Though James Moriarty did pretend to be gay in last year’s season of “Sherlock.”)

Meanwhile, simply by being present, by becoming part of the vernacular of comic book culture, the new characters are giving gay readers images to identify with. They’re also sending straight readers the necessary message that gay people are no longer going to be invisible, even in the most fanciful, fictional, two-dimensional places. And though the Green Lantern may exist in an alternate universe, in this one, in his own mighty way, he’s truly a hero.

Could It Be Green Arrow? Batman?

DC Comics will soon take one of their best known characters and reintroduce them as LGBT.

Maybe Wonder Woman escaped "conversion therapy" or Robin is bisexual — officials at DC Comics told the media this weekend that they intend to change the orientation of one of their iconic characters.

The DC Comics representatives made the statement at a comic conference in London. They said they will soon reintroduce one of their best known characters as LGBT. The folks at DC were prompted to make a change after President Obama's historic endorsement of same-sex marriage earlier this month.

Marvel’s Gay “Young Avengers” Share Long Awaited First Kiss

If we had to wait for seven years to kiss our boyfriends we'd likely be on the verge of a Michael Douglas like nervous breakdown in Falling Down. Talk about a seven year itch! But fan-favorite "Young Avengers" Teddy Altman and Billy Kaplan (superhero names: Wiccan and Hulking), finally got to lip lock—after waiting since 2005—in this week's long awaited issue of the Marvel comic.

Though it's certainly not Marvel's first same sex smooch, Comics Alliance explains why this week's highly-anticipated kiss is historic:
Usually when a kiss between two characters is as highly anticipated and as rapturously received by fans as the Young Avengers kiss has been, it's because the kiss is the moment two characters acknowledge their mutual attraction and get together. If you look at examples in TV shows like Cheers, Lost and Veronica Mars, epic fan-pleasing kisses are always a way to resolve long-simmering tension between two characters.
This kiss isn't like that. Drawn by Jim Cheung and Mark Morales, this is a kiss between two characters who have been in a committed relationship since before their first "on-screen" appearance. This is a kiss between two characters who have long-ago acknowledged their attraction and already established their devotion. And that's why this kiss is remarkable; because it took seven years to show a kiss between two characters who must kiss each other every day. It's a remarkable kiss because of all the times we haven't seen it.

And the countdown for the One Million Moms protest starts at 3, 2, ...

You’re Invited: The X-Men Set To Celebrate Its First Gay Wedding

Northstar, one of a Marvel's first official gay characters, is finally set to wed his boyfriend in what is sure to be an historic upcoming issue of the Astonishing X-Men.

The wedding has been baited in the comic for a few months, but only now are we finding out that it will be of the homosezzual variety. According to Marjorie Liu, writer of issue #51 (which Marvel has promoted with a "Save the Date" notice), Northstar will be a central character in the wedding storyline.

WILL WEDDING BELLS CHIME FOR LIU'S "ASTONISHING X-MEN?"

In comics, weddings never go by without some drama, and this summer, wedding bells are in the air for one of Marvel Comics more dramatically romantic franchises.

The publisher today released a teaser for Marjorie Liu and Mike Perkins' incoming run on "Astonishing X-Men," pointing towards impending nuptials for someone in the cast:

Aside from team leader Wolverine -- who's had some rather interesting weddings in his past already -- candidates appearing in the book include Warbird, Northstar, Gambit, Iceman, Cecelia Reyes and Karma. Of course, possibilities exist within that group for some romantic twists when you look at Gambit's longstanding relationship with Rogue, or Iceman and Reyes' history together, although considering the highly-publicized wedding of Archie character Kevin Keller, it's not unlikely that Marvel and Liu could be booking a reception hall for Northstar and his popular-with-fans boyfriend Kyle.

In a conference call announcing the series last month, Liu said of the book, "We've got Northstar moving back to New York and he's going to be living with his boyfriend, Kyle...Another side of it, we've got characters like Cecelia and Gambit circling each other and [Gambit] moving into his own apartment in Westchester."
